Temer Opens UN General Assembly

President Temer will speak tonight at the opening of the United Nations General Assembly. Since 1947, Brazil has been the first country to speak at the General Debate. He is expected to speak on issues such as sustainable development, human rights and democracy.

 

Temer and Trump

President Temer and three other Latin American presidents met with President Trump for dinner last night. The subject was Venezuela and there was a consensus that the diplomatic pressure for the country to arrive at a democratic solution must continue.

 

They Don’t Stop Coming

Another hurricane, Maria, touched down on the island of Dominica last night. With winds of up to 260 km per hour, it is now a category 5 storm, the highest category there is. It is expected to approach Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands by the middle of the week.

 

Trump and the UN

According to Donald Trump, the United Nations has become too bureaucratic and ineffective, but gave no clue as to whether he would cut U.S. funding. He also hinted that he might pull out of the Iran nuclear agreement. In his speech today, he will likely stress “sovereignty and accountability” rather than joint action on global crises.

 

Merkel Set for One More Term

Voters are widely expected to endorse Angela Merkel for another term as their chancellor in the general elections to be held on Sunday. Martin Schultz, her contender, claims he still has a chance at winning, but the odds of him defeating her appear to have fizzled.
