Tragedy in Daycare Center

Seven children and a teacher died in a daycare center in Janaúba, in the north of Minas yesterday. A former security guard set fire to the children, to the workers and then to himself. Twenty-one children and two adults were admitted to the hospital and remain in critical condition. The teacher who died, Heley Abrey, suffered 90% burns as she tried to save as many children as possible from the flames.

 

Nobel Peace Prize

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) won the 2017 Peace Prize today, as the Norwegian Nobel Committee warned that the risk of a nuclear conflict is greater than for a long time. The organization was acknowledged for drawing attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of the use of nuclear weapons, and for their innovating efforts to have the use of these weapons banned.

 

Peru Ties with Argentina in Bombonera

After their tie with Peru, Argentina would be out of the next world cup if the qualification campaign had ended yesterday. As it is, they now have to win their last match, and depend on a series of results to qualify for a playoff against New Zealand. Colombia dropped to fourth place after a stunning 2-1 defeat to Paraguay in Barranquilla.
