Tragedy in Goiânia

A 14-year-old student, the son of police officers, took his mother’s pistol he had stashed in his backpack and opened fire on his colleagues in a private school in Goiânia on Friday. Two of them were killed and four more were injured. An even-greater tragedy was avoided thanks to the intervention of Simone Elteto, who bravely stood between him and the students and managed to lead him to the empty library, where he was soon arrested.

Elections in Argentina

President Macri’s coalition, Cambiemos, won the congressional elections this Sunday, with victories in three of the five largest provinces of Argentina, including Buenos Aires, where he defeated Cristina Kirchner. One third of the Senate and half of the House of Deputies were up for grabs.

ISIS Loses Largest Syrian Oil Field

U.S.-backed fighters seized Syria’s largest oil field from the Islamic State on Sunday. The area is critical to the country’s economy. This is a major blow to the militant group, which is losing both territory and sources of revenue. They are now struggling to hold onto their last significant territory in Syria, squeezed between two fronts: the Syrian government, backed by Russia and Iran, and the American-backed group, called the Syrian Democratic forces, which took the oil field.

Brazilian Soccer Championship

With a victory over Grêmio, Palmeiras has now jumped to second place in the race for the championship, only six points behind the leader. With only eight games left to go, one of which against Palmeiras, Corinthians needs to win tonight in Rio de Janeiro against Botafogo to increase the distance to a more comfortable nine points.
