Lula was condemned by Sergio Moro, the judge heading Operation Car Wash, to 9 and half years in prison for passive corruption and money laundering. The case involves the triplex he allegedly received as a bribe from the OAS Contractor. His appeal of this decision is now scheduled to be judged on January 24, 2018. Keep your fingers crossed. Who knows? São Paulo may be in for a great birthday present.

The Democratic candidate, Doug Jones, won the election in Alabama to fill the United States Senate seat vacated by Jeff Sessions, now the attorney general. This lowers the Republican majority in the Senate to one, and represents a defeat to Donald Trump, who openly supported the Republican candidate, Roy Moore, despite accusations of sexual misconduct with teenage girls.

At an international climate conference in Paris, President Emmanuel Macron of France urged the world’s political and business leaders to commit more funding to the fight against global warming. But accomplishments were limited.

A surprising factor in greenhouse gas emissions: A third of all the food grown on earth is simply wasted. Globally, about 1.3 billion tons of food a year is thrown out.

That’s important for at least two reasons. The less the world wastes, the easier it will be to meet the food needs of the global population in coming years. Second, cutting back on waste could go a long way to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

U.S. federal prosecutors filed terrorism charges against Akayed Ullah, the suspect in the attack on the New York City subway on Monday. According to him, the only person badly injured in the bombing, he did it for the Islamic State.
